One Word | Part 7

Continuing our One Word Series, Pastor Chris, shares part 7 with the word “Dimensions.” Dimensions is a plural noun meaning, “the around of measurable space or surface occupied by something; size, extent, or magnitude.” When I think about mailing something I cannot help by laugh. I think about the stand-up comedian Brian Regan who had quite the experience with shipping boxed with UPS. Every time that I mail something, I have the hardest time finding the best suited box. I obsess over each dimension of the box, ultimately to minimize my cost.

But words like dimensions, measurements, product units seem to box us in. Yet we rely on them so much. Our brains want to know the limits of things. The exact dimensions in all directions and where they stop. So it’s natural when we apply this to our lives and even our spiritual lives. We often do this with God’s love. Creating a box of a certain size and keep Jesus in it. We imagine his love being incredibly good and wonderful but only to a certain point. “His love reaches me until….” God’s love reaches me, but not if….” “His love reaches me, except when….”

But these limits? They are ours, not HIS! Our brains try so hard to understand his unconditional, merciful love. But we just can’t! And that is why we see what we see in the uproar of “Christians” right now. Jesus was a Sunday morning or evening or Saturday event. Not a life, a daily, a momement-by-moment walk, which it has to be. We have literally put Jesus in a box. The problem is that His love will never fit in the dimensions we are working with! Christ is so much bigger than we can imagine.

The Apostle Paul in his letter to the church in Ephesus writes, “I ask him that with both feet planted firmly on love, you’ll be able to take in with all followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of Christ’s love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:17-19) See God wants to fill up a much bigger part of you that you’ve imagined. To fill you up with God’s grace, peace, joy, and hope. Do I want to meet in person for church? Absolutely, if we could, we would be there right now! But that is not the case right now. However, that does not mean that we leave our relationship with Christ in the box until all of this is done.

God desires so much more for us than a meeting location on a day of the week. He wants to live in this fullness without being afraid of it coming to an end. Without it being limited to a box with specific dimensions, girth units or a One Rate or Flat Rate Salvation. Absolutely nothing can keep you outside of Christ’s love. The Holy Spirit wants to free you. In other words, relax in His love without limits.

What if we do get rid of the box? Started thinking outside the box? Invite someone over to watch Sunday church with you. What if we started to reach out others. Giving and experiencing the breadth of God’s love? What if we really try what today’s verse encourages us to do? Test it’s length, blurb the depths, rise to the heights. What if we open our hearts to the fullness of live that He has for us? Trusting him to love us without measure. Let Christ’s incomprehensible love reach way beyond our dimensions today!
