One Word | Part 11

Pastor Chris bringing part 11 of our One Word series with bite sized truths for everyday. This weeks word is “SET.” It is defined as a verb: to place with care or deliberate purpose. One of my chores growing up like most children was to set the table for dinner. Being an only child, there wasn’t a sibling that I could pawn this job off to, it was all me! I would gather up the plates, utensils, cups, napkins, etc. Sometimes the beverages, condiments or even sides placed on the table with whatever dinner was that evening. I honestly did not like this very much. Just like most children, I would have rather been playing my NES or watching cartoon network on TV.

However, there were times setting the table was kinda fun like, Big holiday meals, friends or family coming over, and Birthdays! There were always special plates or decorations or fancy dishes that we would pull out for these occasions! I was also exited because I knew it came with extra yummy specialty foods, side-dishes, drinks and lots of fun and laughter. This week we had 2 birthdays in our house. One of our daughters is born 2 days before me. So there is a 72-hour window of celebration in our home.

It was quite interesting for birthdays this year. COVID-19 has pretty much shut everything down here in California. No parties or large gatherings. No going out to eat and sitting down at a restaurant. With the wildfires the Sacramento Valley is packed with smoke so no going outside for anything fun. For the majority no experiences. In addition, no big trips or traveling. The most basic birthday in the history of birthdays. But even with all of that, we were still able to have a goo time. And set the table for the big birthday meal!

The Apostle Paul writes in his letter to the church at Ephesus about that plans and the table that God has set for each of our lives. Ephesians 1:8-9 says, “He (God) thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans He took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ.”

Jesus does this same thing for us. He sets our table of life each and everyday with great joy and excitement! With great care, deliberate purpose and beautiful intention, Jesus sets before us the most inviting table we could ever imagine. He thinks of me and you as he designs the place settings and plans the meal. Christ knows what we need.  Similarly, He knows what we hope for. Jesus knows what fills our hearts and satisfies our souls. Just like a quarantined birthday can still be a fun day with games, presents, food and of course cake and balloons!

Therefore an ordinary Day for us can turn into a celebration with Jesus. We just have to accept Christ’s invitation. We are His company, His honored guests, His precious kids! He knows that we are weary and hungry for something more. And we cannot wait for us to experience all that He has set before us! He wants to treat us to His very best — no excuse spared, details overlooked. In other words, exactly what we need and more than we could ever hope for will be on the table! Love? Bowls upon bowls full — plenty to go around. Peace? Quench your thirst with his unlimited supply. Grace? It’s the main course. Everybody gets huge helpings! Hope and Joy? Baskets overflowing. You can have as much as you want. Wonder? Wait until you taste dessert! He has such amazing adventures in store for you! I love me some dessert!

So just for a moment, sit with Jesus. Allow Him to give you everything you need and surprise you with more. Take in the food. The drinks. Laughter and smiles. The love at His table of grace. Come and relax in the special place he’s saving for you at His table. It’s just for you and Its all set!
